Treating the underlying causes of dry eye disease for improved vision, comfort and eye health.

Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT), also known as photobiomodulation, is a gentle, non-invasive treatment used to help manage dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction. Therapeutic light is applied to the eyelids to help reduce inflammation, support healthy cellular function and improve the function of the meibomian glands, which produce the oils needed for a stable tear film. LLLT may help improve tear film quality, reduce eyelid inflammation and relieve symptoms such as dryness, irritation and fluctuating vision. Treatment is comfortable, requires no downtime and can be used alone or alongside other dry eye treatments, including IPL and meibomian gland expression.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT)?

LLLT is a non-invasive treatment that uses near-infrared light to stimulate cellular repair, reduce inflammation and support healthier meibomian gland function. It works through a process called photobiomodulation, helping restore the natural health of the ocular surface.

What Can I Expect During an LLLT Treatment?

LLLT is a comfortable, relaxing treatment that uses a specialised mask-like device positioned over the eyes. The mask emits near-infrared light, which is absorbed by the skin and underlying gland tissue to stimulate natural healing processes.
During the treatment, you will be reclined with your eyes closed while the mask is placed over your face. The procedure is painless and typically takes around 15 minutes.
After the mask is removed, you will notice a temporary afterimage or visual effect, similar to after looking at a bright light. This is normal and will resolve after a few minutes.

Are Different Treatment Wavelengths Available?

Yes. Different wavelengths of light can be used depending on the condition being treated.

The red light mask is the most commonly used mask for dry eye. It is used to manage Meibomain Gland Dysfunction and Chalazions. It’s wavelength is designed to support cellular-level repair, improve function and manage inflammation.

The blue light mask is used to manage conditions like Blepharitis and Demodex. It’s wavelength has anti-bacterial properties, helping to reduce the bacterial load on the eyelids and skin.

How do I prepare for a dry eye treatment?

For best results, please arrive at your appointment with a clean face with no make-up, including mascara. Sunscreen should also be removed prior to treatment. Any metallic jewellery or facial piercings need to be removed. Artificial eyelashes may interfere with the procedure and should be removed before your session.

Can both IPL and LLLT be used to treat dry eye disease?

Yes. IPL and LLLT can be used separately or in combination, depending on the underlying causes of your dry eye disease. Combining treatments can provide a more comprehensive approach by targeting inflammation, meibomian gland dysfunction and other factors contributing to dry eye.

Our Premium Dry Eye Package combines several complementary treatments:

4 × IPL treatments
4 × Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) treatments
4 × Meibomian Gland Expression treatments
