Optos Ultra-widefield imaging captures up to 200° of the retina in a single image

OptiLight® by Lumenis uses Intense Pulse Light specifically approved for the management of Dry Eye Disease associated with Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).
Using precisely controlled pulses of light applied to the skin around the eyes, OptiLight® helps reduce inflammation, improve meibomian gland function and restore the healthy oils essential for a stable tear film. The treatment also targets abnormal blood vessels, bacteria and Demodex mites that may contribute to dry eye symptoms. OptiLight® helps improve tear film stability, enhance eye comfort and provide long-lasting symptom relief.
meibomask® is an advanced in-office thermal treatment designed to improve meibomian gland function and relieve symptoms of dry eye disease induced by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, chalazion, blepharitis and other ocular surface conditions.
The treatment delivers controlled near-infrared light to the eyelids, stimulating a process known as photobiomodulation. This helps reduce inflammation, enhance cellular energy (ATP) production and increase cellular activity, supporting the body’s natural healing and repair mechanisms. BTrackS™ is a sophisticated balance assessment system that provides objective measurement of postural stability and balance function.
Using a highly sensitive force plate, the system evaluates how the body maintains balance while standing and objectively evaluates how efficiently the brain uses information from the visual, vestibular (inner ear) and somatosensory (body awareness) systems to maintain balance. BTrackS is particularly valuable in the assessment and management of concussion, neurological conditions and fall risk.

From a young age, I knew optometry was my calling. At just 14, I wrote to the University of New South Wales requesting a prospectus for their Optometry program, a time well before the internet. When the brochure arrived by mail, I was immediately captivated by the fascinating subjects and knew I wanted a future in healthcare, helping people through better vision.
I graduated from UNSW in 1992 with a Bachelor of Optometry (Honours), receiving the award for the top-performing final-year student. During my studies, I completed an externship in Boston, USA, which broadened my clinical perspective. After graduating, I gained valuable experience working in several busy regional practices across NSW before returning to UNSW as a staff optometrist and clinical educator at the School of Optometry.
In 1995, I relocated to Melbourne and began working with Dr Damien Smith, whose practice later became EyeQ Optometrists Burwood, where I was privileged to work alongside Shirley for over 20 fulfilling years.
I’m passionate about all aspects of optometry, with a special interest in children’s vision, behavioural optometry, vision therapy, and colour vision. I find it incredibly rewarding to help someone overcome visual challenges and reach their full potential.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and my two much-loved cavoodles, Remy and Maisie.
Shirley Walker
Optometrist, Co-Founder
An encouraging conversation with my optometrist inspired me to pursue a career in optometry at Melbourne University. After graduating, I had the privilege of working alongside him for seven invaluable years.
What I love most about optometry is the opportunity to build lasting relationships with patients and their families. This continuity of care allows me to tailor eye health solutions that truly align with each person’s lifestyle and needs.
I offer full-scope, comprehensive eye care for patients of all ages, with special interests in complex contact lens fitting, myopia control, and dry eye management. I also enjoy integrating the latest technology into clinical practice, enhancing both diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes.
Outside of work, you’ll find me playing in a brass band, swimming, hiking with my family, or enjoying a glass of wine with my book club.
Darren Wall
Practice Manager
I’m an experienced optical dispenser and technician, working in all facets of optics since 1983. With a strong foundation in both technical and retail environments, I provide personalised eyewear solutions and support for a wide range of visual needs.
Over the years, I’ve worked closely with optometrists and ophthalmologists, offering expert dispensing services for patients with complex prescriptions and visual challenges. I’ve also held leadership roles, managing multiple optical practices and mentoring teams in delivering outstanding patient care.
I take a methodical yet friendly approach—whether I’m explaining the latest in multifocal lens technology, fine-tuning frame adjustments, or helping you choose the perfect pair of glasses. I’m passionate about optics and take pride in helping people see better and feel more confident.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two adult children, travelling, and making the most of life through music, sport, and the loyal company of my canine sidekick.
Amanda Liu
Optical Dispenser
I first fell in love with optics when I was fitted for my first set of OrthoK lenses at 10 years old. The idea of having contact lenses that corrected my vision while I slept fascinated me and it was truly life changing. Fast forward to graduating university and landing my first job in the height of the covid outbreak, I wasn’t sure if I was happy doing what I was doing. It was at my annual eye exam that my optometrist had reminded me that there was always a career in optics.
After working in an independent optometry practice in Auckland, New Zealand and completing the Optical Dispensing course through ACOD, my partner and I relocated to Melbourne. What I enjoy most about being an optical dispenser is the journey we take our patients on by guiding them to the perfect frame and the best lenses possible. It’s the perfect balance of clinical and fashion. I’m a strong believer that frames don’t have to be boring and that finding the right frame should be a bit of fun!
In my spare time, I love to go on long walks exploring Melbourne and the amazing food scene along with reading in cozy cafes I’ve stumbled upon.
Cat Sharpe
Optical Assistant
As a spectacle wearer myself, I understand how important finding the right glasses are and I love helping patients choose frames that are comfortable and stylish. I enjoy connecting with the local community and I am always down for a chat with any patient that comes in. In my spare time I love diving into a good book (often with my dog cuddled in beside me) and exploring the great outdoors with my family.
