Frequently Asked Questions

What is Dry Eye Disease?

Dry Eye Disease is a common condition that occurs when the tear film protecting the surface of the eye becomes unstable or unbalanced. This can lead to symptoms such as burning, stinging, grittiness, watering, light sensitivity, and fluctuating vision.

The number of people experiencing dry eye symptoms has increased significantly in recent years, driven by factors such as increased screen use, ageing, environmental conditions, medications, and certain health conditions.

Today, we know that Dry Eye Disease is a complex condition involving multiple factors, including:

– Instability of the tear film
– Excessive tear evaporation
– Inflammation of the eye surface
– Damage to the ocular surface tissues
– Changes in nerve function and sensitivity

Could Dry Eye be affecting you?

Symptoms may vary throughout the day and often worsen during prolonged screen use, reading, driving, or exposure to dry environments. Dry Eye Disease can cause a wide range of symptoms, including:
– Dryness or discomfort in the eyes
– Burning or stinging sensations
– Grittiness or the feeling of sand in the eyes
– Redness
– Excessive watering or tearing
– Eye fatigue, particularly when reading or using digital devices
– A feeling of heaviness in the eyelids
– Sore or tired eyes
– Increased discomfort in air-conditioned, heated or windy environments

If you experience any of the symptoms above on a regular basis, you may be suffering from Dry Eye Disease.

A Focused Dry Eye Assessment can help identify the underlying cause and guide effective treatment options.

What causes Dry Eye Disease?

Dry Eye Disease is a complex condition with many possible causes. In some people, the eyes do not produce enough tears, while in others, tears evaporate too quickly due to problems with the tear film.

Lifestyle and environmental factors can play a significant role. Prolonged screen use, air conditioning, heating, wind, smoke and low-humidity environments can all increase tear evaporation and contribute to symptoms.

Medical and health factors may also affect tear production and eye comfort. Ageing, hormonal changes, certain medications and systemic conditions such as diabetes, thyroid disease and autoimmune disorders are common contributors.

Eyelid and tear film conditions are among the most frequent causes of dry eye. Meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis and Demodex infestation can disrupt the tear film and lead to increased evaporation, inflammation and discomfort.

Identifying the underlying cause is essential for developing an effective treatment plan and achieving lasting relief.

How is Dry Eye Disease Diagnosed?

With our specialised equipment we will evaluate your: tear film quality, meibomian gland function, ocular surface staining and health of your corneas and eyelids, and measure your tear stability and break-up time.

What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction is a tear film disorder which can be produced by excessive evaporation of tears in over 86% of Dry Eye Disease cases. The malfunction or obstruction of Meibomain glands, responsible for the lipid layer, leads to insufficient oily components in the tear film, resulting in quicker evaporation, ocular surface damage, and eye discomfort.

What treatment options are available?

Dry eye treatment is tailored to the underlying cause and severity of your symptoms. For many people, treatment begins with preservative-free lubricating eye drops, eyelid hygiene, warm compresses, and lifestyle changes. Nutritional supplements and prescription medications may also be recommended to improve tear quality and reduce inflammation.

For more advanced or persistent dry eye, in-office treatments such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy and Low-Level Light Therapy (LLLT) can help restore healthy gland function, reduce inflammation, and improve long-term comfort. Our goal is to provide personalised care that delivers lasting relief and protects the health of your eyes.
