Frequently Asked Questions

What is dry eye disease?

Dry eye disease is a chronic condition where your eyes don’t produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. This leads to an unstable tear film, causing irritation, redness, and discomfort in your eyes.

What causes dry eye disease?

Several factors can contribute, including natural ageing, reduced tear production, increased tear evaporation, prolonged screen use, medications (like antihistamines or antidepressants), hormonal changes, autoimmune diseases (such as Sjögren’s syndrome), and problems with eyelid function. Environmental factors like dry air, wind, or air conditioning can also worsen symptoms.

How is dry eye diagnosed?

With our specialised equipment we will evaluate your: tear film quality, meibomian gland function, ocular surface staining and health of your corneas and eyelids, measure your tear break-up time.

What treatments are available for dry eye?

As a chronic condition, the aim of treatment is symptomatic relief. Some of the ways this is achieved are: lubricating eyedrops, medicated eyedrops, heat masks, meibomian gland expression, IPL – Intense Pulse Light therapy, nutritional support and lifestyle tips.

Why do watery eyes sometimes mean dry eyes?

When your eyes feel dry and irritated, they can actually overcompensate by producing extra reflex tears. These tears are watery and don’t stay on the eye long enough to properly lubricate it. So, even though your eyes are watering, they’re still technically dry and uncomfortable.
