Your Child’s Vision is Our Priority

Clear vision is a cornerstone of a child’s development, influencing everything from learning to social interaction. Yet many vision problems can go unnoticed because children don’t always realise their sight isn’t as sharp as it should be. Regular eye exams are critical for detecting and correcting issues early, when treatment is most effective.

Left untreated, vision problems can impact reading skills, school performance, hand-eye co-ordination and self-esteem.
Of course, we prioritise not only vision assessments but also ocular health assessments on all children.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should children have an eye examination?

Anytime, if there are any concerns. We recommend, if no obvious issues, to have assessments performed at the following times:

First exam: between 6 months and 12 months

Second exam: between 3 and 3.5 years

Before starting school: around 5 or 6 years

Every 1-2 years afterwards

What should your child expect during the examination?

At Surrey Hills Eyecare, we use child-friendly techniques and equipment to make the experience comfortable and fun. In fact, most children find the experience to be enjoyable. We will check your child’s vision and prescription, also their focusing and how well their eyes work together. In addition, we will assess their retinal health (most likely with speedy imaging) and review the health of the front of their eyes.

How do I know if my child has a vision problem?

Children may not always tell you if their vision is blurry or uncomfortable. Signs to watch for include: squinting, rubbing eyes frequently, sitting very close to screens or books, headaches, covering one eye, difficulty reading or concentrating, and avoiding tasks that require good vision. If you notice any of these, it’s a good idea to book a comprehensive eye exam. Early detection helps prevent learning difficulties and supports healthy visual development.

Why are vision assessments important for children?

Early eye exams help detect vision problems that can affect learning, reading, and development. Good vision is essential for school success and overall wellbeing.

What if my child needs glasses?

If prescribed, glasses for children are specially made to be comfortable and durable. Wearing glasses can significantly improve vision, confidence, and performance at school and play. At Surrey Hills Eyecare, our vast assortment of children’s frame all come with a 2-year warranty, some even have an unconditional 2-year warranty for extra peace of mind.
